New tileset
«

Hi people,
here
you can download a new tileset for Glest. Probably in the future this tileset will be the default tileset forest, but before we prefer to test it for a while, because this new tileset has much more polygons than the old one and maybe can be slow in the oldests machines. We apreciate a lot your feedback about that.
Some images of this tileset:

Nice new trees (and grass)!
There are problems when playing in linux. ( linux is casesenitive)
You must rename some things in the models directory to make it work
grass.G3D -> grass.g3d
tree_1.G3D -> tree_1.g3d
tree_2.G3D -> tree_2.g3d
tree_3.G3D -> tree_3.g3d
tree_4.G3D -> tree_4.g3d
tree_5.G3D -> tree_5.g3d

any feedback from someone? what about framerate using this tileset?, I'm interesting specially in the comments of people that has old PCs, because this tileset has much more polygons than the default Glest tilesets and maybe makes Glest run slow in the oldest machines

I'm using a quite old computer (AMD 1,9 GHz, 512 MB RAM, GeforceFX 5200 (128 MB RAM)). With this, my FPS can fall 14-18 when I'm watching only trees, when there aren't any, the FPS can go above 24.
Oh, and I can build on doodads...

I think my PC is little newer despite it has lower graka (P4@2,2 - 512Ram - Geforce 4200 Ti with 64mb).
I compared at fourrivers with standart and new tileset:
Shadows are 3d and 3d for water is on i think.
-standart:
I have a framerate at 75. Framerate doesnt drop because of the tileset whatever you do (camerazooming) and trianglecount is around 20000 at max (only the map, didnt build new units).
-new:
With the newer tilesset i get 75fps as maximum aswell but if you look at much trees or zoom at them you get drop to 38 frames. Trianglecount is ~40000 then. Basically the rate is around 60 fps so i think its playable all time.
So i think you mustnt worry, although it takes more power it is really worth it (looks so nice

a little question. You only changed the trees and some other objects or did you also changed the terrain-textures? They are really low-sized (@standard, i tryed to change them, but you cant insert higher resolute ones without getting an error), so if you do a new better tileset maybe you could also do better terrain-textures.
The new trees are a huge step better then the old ones
btw: the best trees I ever saw in a game was in 0ad. They are also indie-developers.
Take a look at
this
or
this

I think the trees are small compared to units.
We should make them about 25% bigger
But otherwise they are really nice! Very photo realistic

Nice work I love the new trees!
I just did some quick and dirty benchmarks with the new trees.
My system is:
1.8Ghz dual core
2Gb Ram
Radeon x1650 (256 ram)
Resolution 1024x768
w/ full shadows (shadowmapped) + trilinear filtering + 3d textures
new tree - 45fps
old tree - 90fps
w/ full shadows (projected) + trilinear filtering + 3d textures
new tree - 50fps
old tree - 100fps
no shadows + bilinear filtering
new tree - 70fps
old tree - 120fps
Seems like the trees cause a considerably drop in frames for me, but its ok because they look so good! Even 45fps is still playable.

nope, my computer is anceint, we had it before i was born (i am 12 right now) and it still works fine, and fast, laptops on the other hand will be slow, because of their small memory drive.
Again. sorry for the "Bump".
