I'm glad you asked!  This is something I know about. :)

The Aztecs had groups of warriors called eagle warriors and jaguar warriors, who dressed in animal costumes, used shields, and fought with maquahuitl, which were like sticks edged with razor-sharp stone blades.  According to the Spanish conquistadors who fought against the Aztecs, these weapons were sharp enough to cut off a horse's head.

Aztec eagle and jaguar warriors with maquahuitl:

Spears were also used by the Aztecs.  They also had a weaker melee weapon called a macana, which is like a wooden sword.  Sharp enough to be dangerous, but not nearly as good as a real sword.
Code: [Select]

Another Aztec weapon is the atlatl, which is like a big wooden spoon used to throw small javelins with extreme force.  These take a little time to load, but drastically increase the amount of leverage with which a javelin or dart can be thrown, so the attack speed should be low but the attack strength and range should both be good.  They also used regular slings (not slingshots) which were surprisingly effective against armor.  The sling stones could also be set on fire.  Bows were also used.

It should be noted that the Aztecs never mastered metalwork.  Their weapons were all made of wood, stone, and other non-metallic materials.  Also, since the New World had no horses until Europeans came, the Aztecs never had cavalry.  Most warriors were very poorly armed and poorly trained, and very little armor was worn.  The Aztecs relied on numbers, mobility, and ranged attacks, so most of their units should be cheap and weak.  Jaguar and eagle warriors were skilled veterans who were much better equipped and had light armor.

Other things to consider:
Eagles and snakes feature in Aztec mythology.
Aztecs made a lot of human sacrifices involving cutting out the victim's heart.
One of the Aztec gods was represented as a colorful feathered serpent.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9f/Quetzalcoatl.jpgThey had a kind of farm called a chinampa.  See here: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Chinampa

You can read more here: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Aztec_warfare

Unit suggestions:
Warrior - very cheap unit, no armor, weak attack with a macana (sharpened wooden blade)
Spearman - cheap unit, no armor or light armor, spear attack (range 2?)
Stone Thrower - cheap unit, no armor, medium strength attack with a sling for impact damage
Eagle Warrior - advanced unit, medium range, strong ranged piercing attack with an atlatl, leather armor
Jaguar Warrior - advanced unit, strong melee attack with a maquahuitl, leather armor and shield
Coatl - most powerful unit, feathered serpent
Priest - heals units

Chinampa - farm, produces food
Pyramid - main building, produces slaves
Calmecac - trains elite warriors

Any ideas for an air unit? I have an eagle right now.

And what should the Calmecac look like?

besides no cavalry, they didnt have artillery either. i think that that should be a weakness of theirs, they just have to get into someone's base, no long range units.

Cool, I love Aztecs
The Phorin in Constellus are pretty influenced by Aztecs. I have a WIP temple model which could easily be modified to fit their style more.

(click to show/hide)

You can have it if you want, if you don't; I won't mind. I'm just trying to help out.
You'd have to edit it a bit to be more historically accurate. But it should be a good base to start from I hope....

I think it would be nice to make something like John said ... maybe some more buildings...
my suggestions ... based on John's

Unit suggestions:
Slave - basic unit, does everything nobody want's to do ;-) ... mining, harvesting and building
Warrior - very cheap unit, no armor, weak attack with a macana (sharpened wooden blade)
Spearman - cheap unit, no armor or light armor, spear attack (range 2?)
Stone Thrower - cheap unit, no armor, medium strength attack with a sling for impact damage
Eagle Warrior - advanced unit, medium range, strong ranged piercing attack with an atlatl, leather armor
Jaguar Warrior - advanced unit, strong melee attack with a maquahuitl, leather armor and shield
Coatl - most powerful unit, feathered serpent
Priest of Tonatiuh - steal life from enemies
Priest of Tlaloc - lightning attacks (maybe anti air...)
Priest of Huehueteotl - heals units

Chinampa - farm, produces food
Pyramid - main building, produces slaves
Calmecac - trains elite warriors
Temple of Tonatiuh - temple of the sun god in Aztec mythology (support in fightes by scarifying enemies ... makes warriors stronger)
Temple of Tlaloc - temple of the rain god in Aztec mythology (provides better food production & may be lightning attacks)
Temple of Huehueteotl - temple of the god of life in Aztec mythology (increase life of unit's produce healing priest)

My thoughts exactly. It looks nothing like Aztec art (and to be honest, their art doesn't really belong in Glest).

You're welcome, and these are about the best images of a calmecac I could find:

http://www.nativewiki.org/images/d/d4/Educacion_azteca.jpg

Quote
At 15, all boys and girls went to school. The Mexica, one of the Aztec groups, were one of the first people in the world to have mandatory education for nearly all children, regardless of gender, rank, or station. There were two types of schools: the telpochcalli, for practical and military studies, and the calmecac, for advanced learning in writing, astronomy, statesmanship, theology, and other areas. The two institutions seem to be common to the Nahua people, leading some experts to suggest that they are older than the Aztec culture.
So maybe the calmecac should be either a research building or an advanced barracks, while the telpochcalli should be the regular barracks?

BTW: dose this fit into Aztec?

Aztec sculpture is more like this:

Here are two examples of sacrificial basins, where the hearts of the sacrificed prisoners were put:

A miniature sculpture of an Aztec temple, possibly used as a throne:

And here's what they dressed like:

Hmmmm. Whats the difference between a "Club Fighter" and a "Stick Warrior"?
Also by Jaguar I assume you mean Jaguar Warrior? like John Said?

I think a better format would be having the Jaguar Warrior and Eagle Warrior be the Elite troops and they should be built from the Calmecac.
The "Army Hut" (Which I think War Hut would be a better name for) Should produce the basic and ranged troops. Like the Poison Dart blower, Club fighter and Archer.
Then the priest should summon coatl. I think that would work out better.

Btw what does the "snake statue" do?

ideas:
blow pipe guy = Atlatl skirmisher
club man = Macuahuitl warrior
stick fighter = Quauhololli fighter

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aztec_warfare

also, make the "slave" a "Macehualli"

in a professional mod, there is no room for names like "club guy."

Actually it was club fighter, but Macuahuitl warrior sounds better.

Any ideas for the defence tower unit?

i say that all buildings should have an arrow attack. no "official" defense tower, all the buildings would contribute to defense. (its new, original, and is nothing like the Tech or the Magic!)

Ok, good idea! Not all of them will attack (like the garden) but most will. and you will need to upgrade something for them to start being able to attack.

well, that's what i meant (i mean, it'd be stupid if the garden had an attack....).

so, what's the Snake Statue do?
(and do you have any pics of the mod yet?)
